Enabling Families to Gather Families
Our task is to:
A. Simplify finding for those that we are helping with FamilySearch and partner products.
B. Teach them to always be sure to verify the ordinances that are identified. Because there may be duplicates, relationship problems, or data errors.
“There are no perfect families”
“You should look at the ancestor and make sure they are a real person and that you are in fact related to them. Family Tree is not a perfect tree of ancestors waiting for you to find them. It is a compilation of thousands of human submissions and there are errors, a lot of errors. These errors need to be fixed.” – Shanna Jones, columnist of Genealogist Corner (St George Senior Sampler)
The work cannot be hastened by assuming that data and relationships are accurate, or by doing duplicate ordinances. If we do these things, the work is hindered.
“Patience, Prayer, Research”
“It is the disposition of many of the people to hurry their work along in an unorganized fashion because of their zeal for temple work. Patience, accompanied by prayer and thorough research, will prove best in the end.” – Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 2, p. 209, 1955
“Because of the sacred nature of this work, members should be diligent in assuring the accuracy of all information submitted.” “Those whose names are submitted for proxy temple ordinances should be related to the submitter.” – First Presidency, 1995.
Verification happens with Sourcing
Source before doing the temple work. -- Unless reliable sources are attached and duplicate records accurately merged, there is no way to tell the good from the bad, no way to determine whether relationships are correct, and no way to accurately determine whether ordinances are complete.
“Record Hints and duplicates”
The more accurate and complete the information in a person’s record, the more likely you are to find existing duplicate records. Record Hints helps you fill in information on an ancestor which helps the Possible Duplicates feature of Family Tree work better to uniquely identify them.
This also helps find duplicates because you may have a record hint on your ancestor and find that it is already attached to another person with the same name. Then you can review and see if they need to be merged, which they frequently do.
Guidance of the Spirit
You do not need to be an expert in research, but work to recognize and follow the guidance of the Spirit. He will lead you to those who can help you do things you do not know how to do today and help you to find the resources you need to help others.
